South Tyrol's highest mountain hut is located on the southern side of the Stubai Alps at an altitude of 3,195 m. The Becherhaus was built in 1894 by the German and Austrian Alpine Club but later underwent several remodelings and renovations. The last renovation work at South Tyrol’s highest construction site was completed in summer 2021 after about one year of work. The original construction lasted from March to August 1894. For this, 25 tons of material were carried from Maiern to the summit. That same year, the hut was opened under the name “Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Schutzhaus”. A few years later, the name was changed. The chapel “Maria im Schnee” was also built and can still be visited today.
Despite its impressive location, the hut offers mountaineers running water, warm meals in the cozy lounge, and space for 100 people; fire protection devices, technical equipment, and power supply are all state of the art. The Becherhaus is managed from the end of June to mid-September. Well-known peaks such as Wilder Freiger (3418 m), Zuckerhütl (3505 m), Sonklarspitze (3463 m), and Botzer (3250 m) surround the Becherhaus in the area of eternal snow.
Starting from the end of the Ridnaun valley towards Aglsbodenalm, you can reach the Becherhaus via the Grohmann and Teplitzer huts. After the Teplitzer hut, pass by the picturesque Vogelhüttensee, continue on the path or trail no. 9 over rocks and well-secured sections with wire cables and steps, cross a moraine further on under the Becherfelsen. The last section goes up in serpentines to the Becherhaus. Mountain experience, sure-footedness, and appropriate equipment are absolutely necessary! The return path follows the ascent route.
