Into the Forest
Mushroom Picking
After the rain, the forest becomes a true mushroom paradise. Discover here what you need to know for a successful and legal mushroom hunt.

Hunting for mushrooms

Well-prepared for the forest

The rain has stopped, the forest smells fresh, and between moss and needles, the first chanterelles are already appearing. To make sure your mushroom hunt is not only successful but also legal, here’s everything you need to know.

Permit

Before heading out, you need a paid permit and a valid ID card. The permit costs €10.00 per person per day and can be collected and paid directly at the Ratschings tourist office. Alternatively, you can easily purchase the permit online.

No additional permit is required if you are collecting in your home municipality or on your own property. In these cases, it’s enough to show your ID.

Collecting Areas

You are allowed to collect mushrooms only in the municipality for which you have a permit, as well as in your home municipality or on your own property.

Important to know:
In the municipality of Ratschings, collecting is expressly forbidden in the Innerratschings area starting from Jaufensteg and from the Kalcheralm alpine hut heading valleywards. Clear signs have been placed in the corresponding areas to prohibit mushroom picking.

Collecting is also prohibited in:

  • Landscape protection areas (natural monuments, biotopes, nature parks, Natura 2000 sites)
  • Areas where the landowner explicitly prohibits collecting, such as in the Innerratschings area (marked by signs)

Times

Mushrooms can only be collected on even days, between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.

Amount

  • Outside your home municipality: 1 kg per person per day (from 14 years old)
  • Inside your home municipality: 2 kg per person per day
  • On your own property: 3 kg per person per day

How to Collect Properly

  • Do not damage the mushrooms and do not use rakes or forks.
  • Cut the mushrooms as close to the ground as possible.
  • Clean the mushrooms roughly at the collection site.
  • Transport the mushrooms in stiff, open, well-ventilated containers to keep them fresh.

Controls & Penalties

Compliance with the regulations is regularly checked by the forestry authority. Penalties apply for violations, so it’s important to follow the applicable rules.
