Ore was initially extracted near the surface from loose rock layers. As mining progressed deeper and the rock became harder, miners had to adapt their methods: they heated the rock to loosen it and then worked it with hammers, gads and other tools. The following video explains the exact process and highlights the challenges miners faced.
