"Ibex" Via Ferrata

An adventure for every level

The Ibex Via Ferrata in Ratschings offers something for everyone: from first climbing experiences for children to challenging routes for adrenaline junkies.

Near the end of the valley, above the Pulvererhof, a rock face rises, facing south, which quickly becomes snow-free and dries out quickly after rain. Thanks to these optimal conditions, the short approach, and the picturesque, quiet surroundings, the via ferrata is typically accessible for two-thirds of the year.

Did you know? The name Ibex comes from the Alpine ibex (Capra Ibex), which inhabits the area around the via ferrata in Innerratschings!

The easier main route winds skillfully through the forest and continues until just before the exit along the distinctive pillar, then twists right over a system of ledges and extremely exposed edges, winding up to the compact steep wall, through which the via ferrata continues to the summit book and descent. The variant at grade E, which runs directly along the steep wall, and another variant at grade E, which branches off the main route at the photo point (Ratschings corner) and leads up through expansive rock roofs, meet at the right end of the steep wall.

A short, steep via ferrata section then leads downward to the exit at the existing hiking trail. The main route never exceeds grade C, and although the rock face appears rather unremarkable from below, the route is very exposed and offers breathtaking views.

Along the via ferrata, there are also particularly photogenic spots, with distinctive installations inviting you to take a snapshot. Benches along the route also provide the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking view of the valley.

How to reach the via ferrata

By car: From Sterzing, head towards Stange and turn left at the intersection into the Ratschingstal valley. Follow the road to Innerratschings. At the junction with the sign “To the Kneipp facility,” turn right towards Pulvererhof. Continue on the road for about 500 meters until you reach the parking lot.

Parking: Parking is available directly at the Pulvererhof farm in Innerratschings. Parking is subject to a fee. The daily parking rate is €5.00. Payment can be made with coins (€2, €1, 50c, 20c and 10c) or by debit or credit card. Please note: The parking machine does not give change.

By bus: Bus line no. 319 runs from Sterzing to the “Larchhof” bus stop. From there, it’s a 20-minute walk along the "Pfeifer Huisile" Path (forest road) directly to the via ferrata. Timetables can be found on www.suedtirolmobil.info.

"Stohlwond" climbing garden

Nestled peacefully in the beautiful alpine landscape of the upper Ratschingstal valley, "Stohlwond" is almost hidden, offering climbers a variety of routes ranging from easy to medium difficulty. It is the close contact with the rock and the indescribable feeling of reaching the top that make this sport so special.

"Stohlwond" in the back of the Ratschingstal valley offers exactly these experiences. The climbing garden faces south, which means you can enjoy climbing fun until November. In autumn and spring, you might even be lucky enough to encounter a chamois, with whom you can race up the rocks!

Drive into the Ratschingstal Valley, past the Ratschings-Jaufen ski and hiking area, all the way to the valley end at Flading/Vallettina. A large parking area is available there. From the parking lot, follow the stream downstream along the forest road for about 5 minutes. At the first junction, turn left and shortly after take a narrow trail through the forest. After approximately 10 minutes, you’ll reach the base of the climbing wall.

Do not step on the meadow! Climbing is only tolerated by the landowner under this condition.
No climbing on Mondays, as local hunters conduct shooting practice in the area.
