Sustainability South Tyrol Level 1 is a certification programme which evaluates and rewards the sustainability of South Tyrolean companies, with the goal of promoting sustainable development within the region and encouraging companies to improve and expand sustainable practices; as such, it also provides a contribution towards regional development in encouraging companies to implement sustainable policies which, in turn, helps to protect the environment and the community. Through the promotion of sustainability, the region as a whole reaps the benefits of an enhanced quality of life and a positive environment on both a social and economic level. In order to receive certification, companies must fulfil a variety of sustainability criteria and undergo independent evaluation. Criteria assessed include environmental compatibility, social responsibility, cost-effectiveness and transparency. Companies must, for example, demonstrate energy savings, use renewable energy sources, cut their waste generation, provide fair working conditions and foster local supply chains.
