The Sterzing Christmas Market puts even the biggest Christmas grouch into the Christmas spirit: colourful fairy lights, special customs and traditions, decorated houses and shops. Together with a cup of mulled wine and freshly baked biscuits, Christmas music, and children’s laughter, and the joyful anticipation for Christmas is complete.
The Zwölferturm tower shines from above, and the stalls are packed together on the town square. There is a lot of reflective and cheerful activity. Treat yourself to a delicious goulash soup or traditional “Strauben” (funnel cake), enjoy the tempting scents and handmade figurines. Beautiful candles, glassware, pottery, handcrafted nativity scenes and carved figures, fine wines and brandies, typical regional delicacies – It’s hard to decide where to look first.
The only break from this reflective time is on 5 December: when the annual Krampus and St. Nicholas procession moves through the streets of the city centre. Well behaved children receive small gifts, while Krampuses – scary creatures with fur and horns – ensure law and order.
