When fairy lights illuminate the streets of Sterzing/Vipiteno, the scent of mulled wine and freshly baked cookies fills the air and the Zwölferturm tower rises proudly above the festively decorated square, then the quietest time of the year has truly begun. The Sterzing Christmas Market transforms the historic city into a winter wonderland – peaceful, charming and full of South Tyrolean tradition.

Devil's and St. Nicholas Parade

Only on 5 December does the peaceful atmosphere make way for something a little wilder: the traditional Devil's and St. Nicholas Parade marches through the streets of Sterzing. Starting at 6:00 p.m., the procession begins in the northern part of town, moves through the old town centre, across the main square, under the Zwölferturm tower, and into the new town centre. While well-behaved children receive small gifts from St. Nicholas, the fearsome devils – wild figures with fur and horns – ensure order...and excitement.
